MY EXPERIENCE AT CNIB LAKE JOE: A CAMP LIKE NO OTHER FOR BLIND INDIVIDUALS

Submitted by Suleman Arshad on
Suleman wearing sunglasses, a cap, and a blue Hurley hoodie stands on the grassy shore of a lake with a calm expression. Behind him, people are enjoying the water, some wading near the shore while others kayak or use floating platforms. A blue and yellow inflatable structure is visible in the distance, along with lush green trees surrounding the lake under a bright blue sky with scattered white clouds.

Moving to Canada in 2022 was a big transition for me. In Pakistan, I had attended various youth leadership conferences, from YLC to Markhor and others. While these conferences were impactful, I never came across an event or camp specifically designed for blind individuals. That changed when I learned about CNIB Lake Joseph Camp in Muskoka, Ontario.

This camp is more than just a beautiful retreat, it is the most accessible place for blind individuals that I have ever experienced. For one week, blind participants from all over Canada come together to engage in unique activities, network with others, and build confidence. Many attendees return year after year because of the unforgettable experience it offers.

Unique Activities Designed for the Blind

One of the highlights of CNIB Lake Joe is the wide range of activities tailored specifically for blind participants. Some of these were completely new to me, and I was amazed by how inclusive they were.

Here are just a few activities that stood out:

  • Water skiing for the blind – something I never thought I could experience.

  • Pontoon boat rides – a relaxing way to explore the lake.

  • Blind soccer – making the game accessible and competitive.

  • Blind table tennis (ping-pong) – an innovative take on a popular sport.

  • Music, arts, and bingo nights – adding a fun social element to the camp.

It was incredible to see how thoughtfully everything was planned to ensure that blind participants could fully enjoy and participate.

Accessibility and Inclusion at Its Best

CNIB Lake Joe is designed with accessibility in mind. The entire environment, from accommodations to dining areas, is structured to be fully navigable for blind individuals. One thing that impressed me was their consideration of dietary restrictions, including HALAL options, which made the experience even more inclusive.

The camp offers different themed weeks, such as Young Adult Week and Family Week, catering to different age groups and interests.

The Impact: Confidence and Leadership Development

Beyond the activities, the camp provides an opportunity to develop confidence, independence, and leadership skills. Many attendees, including myself, found it to be an empowering experience. Meeting other blind individuals, sharing experiences, and learning from one another was just as valuable as the activities themselves. The staff was highly trained and supportive, ensuring that every participant felt comfortable and included.

Affordability and Accessibility

One might assume that such a well-organized camp would be expensive, but CNIB Lake Joe is quite affordable. The cost includes:

  • Transportation to and from the camp

  • Accommodation

  • All meals

  • All activities

Moreover, scholarships and financial assistance are available for those who need them, making the camp accessible regardless of financial background.

A Unique Opportunity for Blind Individuals

I am not sure if similar camps exist in other parts of the world, but if you are a blind person in Canada, this is an opportunity you should not miss. It is an experience that goes beyond recreation, it fosters personal growth, builds connections, and proves that blindness is not a limitation.

I would like to thank the entire CNIB team for giving me the chance to attend this incredible camp. I highly recommend every blind person attend CNIB Lake Joe at least once in their life.
