The Commonwealth is a vast network of 56 member countries, spanning Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Pacific. This international organization offers a wealth of opportunities, particularly for young people looking to make an impact in their communities. Despite its wide reach and influence, many young individuals remain unaware of the numerous programs and platforms the Commonwealth provides.
As someone who personally benefited from the Commonwealth’s initiatives, I want to shed light on the opportunities available, particularly in the youth sector, and encourage others to explore and engage with this global network.
The Role of the Commonwealth in Youth Development
The Commonwealth actively supports youth through various programs, funding opportunities, and recognition platforms. One of the key bodies focusing on young people is the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP), which aims to empower young leaders, provide skill-building opportunities, and create networks for collaboration.
Key Commonwealth Departments Supporting Youth
Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) , Focuses on youth empowerment, leadership training, and skill development.
Commonwealth Secretariat , Works on policies, governance, and international development, often engaging youth in decision-making.
Commonwealth Foundation , Supports civil society organizations, including youth-led initiatives.
Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) , Represents young people from member countries and advocates for youth-related policies.
Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships , Offers scholarships for students from Commonwealth countries to study in leading universities.
Commonwealth Children and Youth Disability Network (CCYDN), provides a platform for disabled youth to connect, share learning, develop leadership and advocacy skills and knowledge to influence on disability rights.
Commonwealth Youth Awards and Recognition
The Commonwealth recognizes young changemakers through various award programs. I personally experienced this in 2016 when I was honored with the Commonwealth Youth Worker Award under the “Empowering People Through Arts and Sports” category. I received this award in London from Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. This recognition was a turning point in my journey, reaffirming my dedication to community service and motivating me to do even more.
How the Selection Process Works
Every year, the Commonwealth opens applications for different youth awards and leadership programs. Individuals from Commonwealth countries can apply under specific categories. If selected, the Commonwealth covers all expenses, including visa fees, travel, and accommodation. This is an incredible opportunity for students, young professionals, and community workers to gain international exposure, connect with like-minded individuals, and amplify their impact.
Why You Should Get Involved
Engaging with the Commonwealth can be a life changing experience. Beyond recognition and awards, it offers access to training programs, funding for projects, networking with global leaders, and the opportunity to contribute to policymaking. For youth involved in community service, activism, entrepreneurship, or leadership, the Commonwealth is a platform that not only acknowledges their work but also provides avenues to expand it.
Final Thoughts: Share Opportunities, Build Leaders
One thing I have learned in my journey is that opportunities must be shared. True leadership is not about keeping knowledge to yourself but about ensuring others benefit from the same paths that helped you grow. I strongly encourage young individuals to explore the Commonwealth, subscribe to their platforms, and apply for programs that align with their passions and goals.
